We arrived to our little rental log cabin in Corea, Maine on the Schoodic Peninsula on Friday afternoon. We are only a few minutes from the northern part of Acadia National Park and about an hour from the main part of the park and Bar Harbor. It's a sleepy little town that seems to derive it's main income from lobster fishing. We enjoyed a lobster picnic dinner on the Corea wharf when we arrived.
Saturday we explored the Schoodic portion of Acadia and attended two fantastic educational programs that were intended for the kids, but I think we enjoyed them just as much. The first was on birds and the second was a "touch tank" where we were able to learn about and handle different sea creatures that you'd find in tidal pools. These included sea stars, urchins, snails, crabs, and a very ornery clam. This clam was large enough that it required two hands to hold. We learned that as a defense mechanism clams will shoot out water to startle their enemy. The instructor picked up the clam and it sprayed out about a 1/2 cup of water. I think she thought the clam was all done when it sprayed about another cup of water right in Nora's face. It startled everyone, particularly Nora! It proceeded to spray a few more times even when placed back into the tank. In the evening on Saturday we went to the LL Bean outlet and got some great finds.

Sunday we drove to the main part of Acadia and drove up Cadillac Mountain, hiked, biked around a big lake, and explored Bar Harbor. The kids also became "junior park rangers" after completing several required activities and were sworn in and received special centennial junior park ranger badges because this is the 100th anniversary of the creation of the National Parks - pretty cool!
Tomorrow we head out of nature and into Boston...
